A Brief History of Vanadzor School No. 6

Vanadzor Secondary School No. 6 was established in 1938 in the house of Mirzents Sosi in Kirovakan. Students from various schools were transferred here, and that same year the school graduated its first students. The founding principal was Arushan Grigoryan. Among the first graduates was the well-known journalist in the city and the republic, Artsrun Sargsyan, whose diploma copy is kept in the school museum.

On June 22, 1941, the Great Patriotic War began. The principal at that time, Sargis Amirkhanyan, left for the front four days later, taking almost all the boys of the 1940-41 school year with him, not all of whom returned to their hometown: Lendrush Arakelyan, Onik Petrosyan, Simon Simonyan, Levon Tonoyan, Seryozha Aghababyan, Andranik Grigoryan, Vram Pashinyan, Ararat Melyan, and others.

For many years, the school’s pioneer squad was named after Suren Avetisyan, who died in the Battle of Stalingrad.

After the victorious end of the war, the school was led by the unforgettable Heghush Zargaryan. During those years, the school became a girls’ school.

Thanks to Heghush Zargaryan, the school’s reputation grew, and it became known for teaching foreign languages, especially English. The school was famous in the city for its English specialists: Anzhik Shovgaryan, Roza Grigoryan, Artsvik Chopuryan, Margarita Hovhannisyan, Vardges Keshishyan, Henrik Sargsyan, Svetlana Yetimyan, while Flora Apinyan was recognized across the Soviet Union.

Some subjects were taught in English, such as Physics and Geography. The school had technical translation, language-lab, and well-equipped technical classrooms. Now, graduates of this school continue the work of their teachers in schools and universities across the city and republic, including Nune Marikyan, Lusine Baghramyan, Hripsime Khangadyan, Luiza Grigoryan, Nara Magtaghyan, and others.

During advanced language learning, teachers from the USA also taught at the school, and there was a friendly connection with schools in Pasadena.

For many years, the school was taught by the honored teacher and outstanding physics specialist Vachik Zakaryan. The school history also includes notable figures like Zhenya Mkhitaryan, Susanna Vardanyan, Lena Grigoryan, Maria Sargsyan, Tamara Shahverdyan, Roza Chobanyan, Alvina Petrosyan, Julieta Argushyan, Edik Hovhannisyan, Zhenya Galstyan, Anik Barseghyan, Nora Pashinyan, Asya Mkrtchyan, Rudik Vardanyan, Anahit Sargsyan, Robert Gevorgyan, Zhanna Malumyan, Silva Yetimyan, Karine Karhanyan, Alla Margaryan.

Heghush Zargaryan was succeeded by devoted principals Gurgen Papyan, Sero Antonyan, Seryozha Barseghyan, Mihrdat Odabashyan, Gevorg Gevorgyan, Seyran Sarukhanyan, Lyudmila Norek.

The work of the school was also supported by supervisors Zarik Ayvazyan, Anush Ishkhanyan, Onik Matinyan, Suren Makinyan, Flora Apinyan, Margarita Hovhannisyan, Lyuba Bagdadtsyan, Tamara Argushyan, Anahit Hakopyan, Aida Hovhannisyan.

Notable alumni include Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Academician Hrant Avetisyan; Doctors Hambardzum Karapetyan, Volodya Ghazakhentsyan; world-renowned gymnast and Olympic champion Albert Azaryan; VPMI lecturers, Doctor of Historical Sciences Felix Movsisyan; Candidate of Historical Sciences Gagik Yetimyan; Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Lilit Antonyan; lecturers and actresses Marine Mkhitaryan and Alla Hovhannisyan; the late poet Samvel Zuloyan; Colonel Kamo Hovhannisyan, former head of military counterintelligence Stepan Baghdasaryan; MP and lawyer Edmon Marukyan; well-known bankers Mher Martirosyan and Krist Marukyan; legendary hero of the Battle of Stalingrad and Doctor of Historical Sciences Suren Mirzoyan.

Three experienced and recognized teachers were awarded by His Holiness Karekin II: Aida Hovhannisyan, Venera Harutyunyan, Lala Mirzoyan. Many teachers received the “Best Teacher of the Year” award in Lori region, and Andranik Sargsyan received the “Movses Khorenatsi” medal.

Longtime deputy principal, specialist in Armenian language and literature Aida Hovhannisyan was awarded the Golden Commemorative Medal by the Prime Minister of Armenia. Many other teachers were recognized by the city and regional authorities.

Teachers with over 20 years of experience include Anahit Hakobyan, Aida Hovhannisyan, Anahit Simonyan, Zhenya Amirjanyan, Madlena Azoyan, Susanna Yeremyan, Alvard Galstyan, Armenuhi Ghumashyan, Venera Harutyunyan, Andranik Sargsyan, Karine Gharakeshishyan, Karine Kocharyan, Gayane Mankikyan, Anaida Zargaryan, Gayane Demirchyan, Gohar Mkhitaryan, sculptor Sargis Gharibyan (Sevo). The school administration has worked closely with these teams for many years under Principal Lyudmila Norek and Deputy Principals Anahit Hakobyan and Aida Hovhannisyan.

Students have excelled in regional, provincial, and republican Olympiads, especially in History, Armenian language, and Biology, winning first, second, and third prizes and diplomas.

In History, Hasmik Vardanyan and Maria Ghambaryan won first and second diplomas; Rafael Martirosyan, third diploma; Aleksan Makasyan, certificate; in Armenian language and literature, Yana Hovhannisyan won first and third diplomas and certificate; Arpine Saghatelyan and Lilit Grigoryan won third diplomas; Ani Saghatelyan won first diploma in Biology; Geography awards included certificates.

Over the last 15 years, the school has produced gold medalists: Zohrap Bekchyan, Lena Harutyunyan, Suren Bekchyan, Tsovinar Eloyan…

Students also excelled in sports and military-patriotic competitions.

The school maintains strong patriotic and physical education traditions. Notable athletes include Zaven Evoyan, Rafael Simonyan, Artur Nersisyan, Anzhik Malumyan, Laert Avagyan, Felix Sargsyan.

Many graduates have completed military academies and joined the Armenian Army officer corps: Samvel Gevorgyan, Hovhannes Chatinyan, Armen Hartenyan, Arsen Mkrtchyan, Movses Khudinyan, Norayr Hovhannisyan, Nikolay Kalashyan, Edik Malumyan, Tigran Mosoyan, Gevorg Hakobyan, Sargis Khojayan, Tonik Martirsyan, Mnatsakan Ghambaryan, Ashot Grigoryan, Albert Malumyan, Taron Varderesyan, Movses Ayvazyan.

In 2000, the school celebrated its 60th anniversary, inviting former teachers and alumni.

A memorable event was the 2001 reunion of graduates from 1941 with recent graduates. Suren Mirzoyan, awarded the UNESCO title "Man of the World" and residing in Volgograd, visits his alma mater every summer.

On May 24, 2004, a student art exhibition dedicated to Independence Day was opened, attended by His Holiness Karekin II.

Another significant date in school history was February 26, 2006, when the USAID-renovated gym was inaugurated. Present were organization leaders, the mayor, regional representatives, school principals, graduates, parents, and guests.

Among the school’s notable events are chess competitions dedicated to Artsrun Sargsyan, the first graduate, journalist, and Armenian chess champion, often officiated by his son, Vilen Sargsyan.

The school has always excelled in debate club games, recitation, and music festivals, receiving certificates of excellent participation and prizes for the "Barin Ara" initiative.

In 2013, students of School No. 6 represented Vanadzor in the republican parade of Armenian national symbols.

The school celebrates all national and church holidays with events: Independence Day, Armenian Army Day, Motherhood and Beauty Day, Teacher's Day, International Women's Day, Saint Sarkis, Vardanants Feast, Translators’ Day, Knowledge Day, and the Last Bell ceremony.

The school has a rich program of excursions and pilgrimages.

Although the school is now a basic school, its knowledgeable and dedicated staff continue to provide a lively school life and send well-educated, intelligent, and disciplined students to high schools and other educational institutions.
